The festivities of Opening Day and a moment of silence for Rusty Staub preceded a 9-4 Mets win over the Cardinals.

July 30, 2016: Mike Piazza’s Retired # 31 Is Unveiled
Video by Joe Rini
July 30, 2016: Mike Piazza Night at Citi Field
As when the Mets franchise honored the 1986 championship Mets team in May, the ceremony retiring Hall of Famer Mike Piazza’s number 31 was also a joyful night celebrating the team’s past (also, like the night in May it was joyful until the game started as the Mets lost to the Rockies 7-2). I was able to ask Piazza at the pregame press conference about his experience playing for Tom Lasorda and Bobby Valentine (chuckling, he said, “Maybe Tommy prepared me to play for Bobby.”) and he seemed genuinely touched by the honor of having his number retired by the Mets. He was joined by former teammates Edgardo Alfonzo, Cliff Floyd, and Al Leiter, and Leiter joined him for the ceremonial first pitch. As Mike crossed the wet white tarp stretched across the Mets infield on this drizzly night, he had the look of walking across the snow and I was glad he didn’t slip in the “snow” on his big summer night. You can hear my question to Mike Piazza at about the eight minute mark and my question to Terry Collins is about three minutes into the video.
July 2, 2016: Fred Wilpon Inspects the Troops
Mets owner Fred Wilpon isn’t typically on the field prior to a game so it was a pleasant surprise to see him with the team, the fans, and even the FOX broadcasters on July 2. Photos by Joe Rini
July 2, 2016: Pre-Game Routines
I was able to capture some pre-game activities prior to the Mets 4-3 win over the Cubs on July 2 and chatted with Brandon Nimmo a day after his first major league home run. Photos by Joe Rini
June 18, 2016: The Rookie and the Veteran
Prior to the Braves topping the Mets 4-3 on June 18, I chatted with veteran James Loney and rookie Ty Kelly. It was interesting to hear the perspectives of someone who’s been in the majors for a decade versus someone who had already made two trips between the majors and Triple-A in less than one month. As for Mets batting coach Kevin Long, he keeps a close eye on veterans and rookies in the batting cage.
May 26, 2016: Mets Honor 1986 Champs (Part III): When Final Became the First
Perhaps the most touching moment of the evening occurred when Jesse Orosco threw out the ceremonial first pitch to D.J. Carter, the son of the late Gary Carter, by re-enacting the final pitch of the 1986 World Series. Photos by Joe Rini
May 26, 2016: Mets Honor 1986 Champs (Part II): Meeting the Mets
A classy touch to the festivities honoring the 1986 Mets was having 2016 team greet their predecessors on the field. Photos by Joe Rini
May 26, 2016: Mets Honor 1986 Champs (Part I)
The 1986 Mets were honored before the May 26 game against the Dodgers. While the 2016 Mets lost 9-2 that night, it was fun catching up with the 1986 team in the press room before the game and the on-field ceremony was well done (even long-time Mets fan Glenn Close sang the National Anthem) with the individual player introductions capped off by Jesse Orosco and D.J. Carter, the son of the late Gary Carter, re-enacting the triumphant final out of the 1986 World Series. Photos by Joe Rini
